What it measures: decoding, isolated from memorization — students read made-up words like vop and lat, scored on Correct Letter Sounds (CLS) and Words Recoded Correctly (WRC). The subtest teachers ask about most, because students who've never seen nonsense words freeze on the format.

What it measures: comprehension while reading silently — every few words, students pick the one word (of three) that fits the sentence. Why teachers pick these

Built like the benchmark, not like a worksheet

01Official UofO goals on every sheet

Every printed goal is the University of Oregon DIBELS 8 Green "Core Support" minimum for that exact grade and window — no invented numbers, no vague targets.

02Same format, same scoring

Layout, timing, and scoring rules align with DIBELS 8 administration — CLS and WRC for NWF, WCPM and accuracy for ORF, the adjusted-score formula for Maze. Benchmark day feels familiar, not foreign.

03Answer keys and teacher copies included

Every probe ships with a scoring key or marked teacher copy, plus teacher directions — hand a probe to a para or tutor and the session runs itself.

04Original material, fresh stimulus

Independently authored probes and passages — not recycled official forms your students will see again on test day, and not random worksheets dressed up as DIBELS.

Questions teachers ask

DIBELS 8 practice — FAQ

What is DIBELS 8?
DIBELS 8 (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, 8th Edition) is an assessment from the University of Oregon that measures early reading skills from kindergarten through 8th grade using short, 1-minute timed measures. Most schools administer it three times a year — at the beginning, middle, and end of year (the BOY, MOY, and EOY benchmark windows).
How is DIBELS 8 different from mCLASS?
They use the same underlying assessment. mCLASS, from Amplify, is the digital platform many districts use to administer and score DIBELS 8. If your school tests through the mCLASS app on a tablet, your students are taking DIBELS 8 subtests — practice for one is practice for the other.
Which subtests are given at which grades?
LNF and PSF run in kindergarten and Grade 1. NWF and WRF run kindergarten through Grade 3. ORF runs Grades 1–8, and Maze runs from Grade 2 BOY through Grade 8 EOY. The grade-by-subtest map at the top of this page shows the full picture — and our packs cover every cell of it.
Are these the actual DIBELS 8 probes?
No. The official forms are copyrighted and distributed to schools by the University of Oregon. Our packs are independently authored practice probes that align with the same format, scoring rules, and difficulty progression — so students get extra reps in the same skill and the official probes feel familiar. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Oregon or Amplify.
Where do the printed benchmark goals come from?
Every goal on every sheet is the official University of Oregon DIBELS 8 Green "Core Support" minimum for that grade and benchmark window, taken from the published UofO benchmark goals document. When the goal says 32, that's the real number your benchmark report will be judged against.
How often should students practice?
Short and frequent beats long and rare. Most teachers run one or two 5-minute sessions per week per student in the relevant subtest — or use the Daily Practice warm-up packs to make it an automatic classroom routine. The goal isn't to cram; it's to keep the timed format familiar so nothing about benchmark day is a surprise.
Which pack should I start with?
Match the subtest to your grade: kindergarten starts with LNF and PSF; Grade 1 leans on NWF and WRF; Grades 2–3 add ORF and Maze; Grades 4–8 use ORF and Maze. If you'd rather not decide, each grade bundle collects everything one grade is tested on, and the Mega Bundles cover the whole library.
Do you offer free samples?
Yes — seven of them, covering every measure: NWF (K and Grade 1), PSF with audio (K and Grade 1), WRF (one probe per grade K–3), ORF (a Grade 3 passage plus Maze probe), and Maze (one probe per grade, 2–8). Grab them here — they use the exact same layout and scoring as the paid packs.
